Jeff Bezos’ Wedding: Dream vs. Reality

0

Who Is Jeff Bezos?

For those who don’t know, Jeff Bezos is an American businessman best known as the founder and former CEO of Amazon. He’s a self-made multi-billionaire with an estimated net worth of over $235 billion. At 61 years old, he has four children and is known for his business empire, space explorations. And now… his ultra-luxurious wedding.

The Wedding’s Guest List

Let’s talk about the wedding that everyone has been buzzing about: Jeff Bezos’ wedding to Lauren Sánchez.

The wedding took place in Venice, Italy, with only 200 people.

The list includes the Kardashian-Jenner family, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sydney Sweeney, Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, Ivanka Trump, and Tom Brady. Orlando Bloom is also attending, right after his split with Katy Perry.

The Dress

Lauren reportedly had 27 custom outfit changes throughout the wedding celebrations.

Her wedding gown? A long-sleeved, lace mermaid-style dress designed by Dolce & Gabbana, complete with 180 silk chiffon-covered buttons. A dress that took over 900 hours of atelier work to complete. Yep, 900 hours.

Guests’ gifts

Don’t think the guests left empty-handed. Each guest received a luxurious bag filled with Venetian goodies. Women got plush black open-toe slippers from Amazon, while men received Vibi Venezia blue velvet Venetian slippers.

Wedding Went Wrong

Now, while the $50 million wedding looked like something out of a fairytale. It sparked major backlash, especially among Venetians themselves.

So… what went wrong?

Despite all the glam, many locals were not happy with the way the event unfolded. And they weren’t afraid to show it. The city, already fragile due to climate threats and over-tourism, suddenly had to host one of the wealthiest men in the world, and close off areas to regular people while doing it.

Locals were quick to protest. Some brought inflatable crocodiles. Some dumped Bezos dummies holding fake money into the canal, placed on cardboard Amazon boxes. Others staged eerie mannequins to represent the soulless consumerism they associate with Bezos.

The main complaints from Venetians were tied to:

  • Over-tourism in a city that’s already struggling
  • Skyrocketing housing prices
  • Climate change and flooding risks
  • And the increasing feeling that Venice is no longer for Venetians

It might sound extreme, but their message was clear:

“This is not what Venice is for.”

Some even alleged that Bezos rented out Venice, or at least major parts of it, to make sure everything went flawlessly. While this hasn’t been confirmed, it definitely added fuel to the fire.

So, while the wedding might have been a dream come true for Bezos and Sánchez, for some locals, it felt more like a nightmare. Another example of how wealth can shape spaces that aren’t supposed to be private playgrounds.
